Mission
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is a full service law enforcement agency, which provides many services to the residents and visitors of Washington County, NY.  These include law enforcement, jail operations, civil, marine navigation and drug task force membership.

Mission
The mission of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office is to provide twenty-four hour coverage to both the residents of Washington County, and to those people who are traveling through our jurisdiction.  We are dedicated to serving and protecting the people within our boundaries.   The services that officers provide involve many varied and, at times, complex duties and responsibilities.  However, creating and maintaining a feeling of security by the people in our community can best meet the basic mission of policing

Agency Staffing
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office has a total of 137 full and part-time employees.  An elected Sheriff, an appointed Undersheriff and two Lieutenants oversee the agency.  The law enforcement division of the agency consists of 24 full time sworn deputies, with two assigned to the civil division, and Thirteen part-time deputies.  There is one Patrol Lieutenant and five Sergeants, one of which is the training officer.  The investigative division is comprised of three Criminal Investigators with one serving as a Juvenile Officer

 

Sheriff Roger Leclaire

Sheriff Roger Leclaire began his career in the Sheriff’s Office in 1973. Over the course of the next 10 years, Sheriff Leclaire served in many capacities in the Department, including Guard, Road Patrolman, Road Patrol Sergeant and Investigator. Sheriff Leclaire left the Department in 1983, when he took the position of Senior Investigator for the Washington County District Attorney’s Office. In the District Attorney’s Office, he was in charge of all Criminal Investigators, Supervisor of the Washington County Arson Squad and Stop DWI Coordinator for the County. He was elected Sheriff in the Fall of 1995. Sheriff Leclaire is a graduate of the State University of New York Empire State College. He has attended numerous police schools and has qualified as a level two arson investigator and also has qualified as a fingerprint expert. Sheriff Leclaire also holds the rank of Colonel in the United States Army Reserve. Washington County has a population of 62,807 and an area of 835 square miles
